My husband eyed the latest jewel with somewhat disgust and confusion after I bought yet another "Mother's Day bible" for myself. It's what I wanted! I felt I had to explain to him the obsession with collecting bibles. I told him but good. Afterward I felt absolved, as if I had confessed. Words came pouring, without pause. It had been building up for years. I can touch a Bible, I can interpret it my way, read others and have as many I want.
I know now it might have all came from my Catholic upbringing. Catholicism that kept the Bible a secret, only a priest could touch and kiss a Bible. My parents Bible was scary, the thick gold one that rested on our coffee table. Nothing could touch it, breathe or heaven forbid ever lay any thing on top of it. I never actually saw someone pick it up in our family. It glowed mockingly in the dark, "you can't touch this". We only read Bible verses in our Missals on Sunday.
Somehow I knew something was missing in translation. Me.
Now I have many Bibles. Bibles for every room; my mother in law laughs that I read one in the bathroom. I underline memorable verses, fold important pages; they are read. I have the Women's, Amplified, The Message, Student, Pocket size, Oxford, Inspirational, NRSV, NLT, NIV, and have even inherited the scary gold Marian bible from my Mother. I opened it and read that it was a gift to her from my Dad on Mother's Day 1958.
I want more. I want to read Bibles in foreign languages. My religious curiosity is peaked.

Momma Mia Ghia
My mother bought this new. Mom always drove a Mustang. She worked and felt she earned it. She did. The Mustang Ghia had hot pink interior and was slick. It wa the best Mustang yet. We called it the "PimpMobile". My g.friends and I drove it to the Westport Missouri Flea Market one weekend; my parents were out of town. All of us took turns at the wheel, only one of us had a license. We reveled in all the traffic violations we didn't get ticketed for. We thought my parents would never know.
I had a few boring months spent at home after that.
So any way ....every time I see a Ford Mustang, Mom, I think of you. I will bring a model of one to put on your headstone, when I visit it this year. You were the best, Mom.
(That was the only wild thing I did, Mom; well except for that '75 Spring Break trip to Padre Island and Matamoros and that's another blog. Luuuv and miss you Mom!)
